DFG-NSF International Workshop on Research and Development in Mathematics and Science Education

March 5-8 2003

Leibniz-Institute for Science Education (IPN), Kiel, Germany

Focus topics for the conference were choose in advance. Plenary papers were given by both German and US participants to initiate discussion.

Participants of the conference then self-organized into different workgroups to explore and discuss common research interests related to the focus topics. The workgroups were:

Each workgroup produced a summary document highlighting major conclusions and potential action items.

The first DFG-NSF International Workshopwas focused on exploring mutual research intersts in mathematics and science education and building collaborations between DFG-sponsored research groups and NSF-sponsored Centers for Teaching and Learning.

Der Geistkaemfer (The Ghost Fighter) by Ernst Barlach in Kiel. This statue was removed during the Third Reich because it was considered degenerate art. It was later found buried in the Luneburg heath.
